Do you ever wonder how you are going to get through the day with all you have to do?
Perhaps you read posts on social media which talk about self-care, “me time” or getting a good night’s sleep and you think, “yeah that’s for other people, they have no idea what real life is like?”
And yes, I get that; sometimes I do have to really remind myself what life was like, and what I believe life is still like for many people I know.
10 years ago, I was working full time (in a stressful full-on role, which was later given to 3 people!) I was a single mum of a young child, and I had a commute that often caused me to be late if traffic was tricky.
I didn’t have a lot of “me” time. After I collected my son from after-school club, dinner, bath, bed, I would have a house to sort and my laptop with more work to do was never far away. I would fall into bed late, dreading the alarm going off before 6 am most days.
I recall when my son was about 6 or 7, he told his teacher I didn’t listen to him or play with him, it broke my heart, he was (and is) one of the best things in this life. Finding time to give him the attention he deserved felt near impossible.
Something needed to change.
I couldn’t continue working at this rate, putting work before myself and my son, but quitting (at this point) wasn’t an option.
I started meditating and I found that life started getting a little easier. People would smile at me, and be helpful. My favourite meditation was an archangelic meditation recorded by Shakti Durga. It is about 45 minutes long, so for 40 days (the length of a spiritual practice) I set my alarm for 5 am and I would spend the time first thing in the morning meditating with the angels.

I recall being envious of others I knew who had more time to delve in to their spiritual life, who didn’t have to wake up at 5am to fit a meditation in before a full day’s parenting and work; sometimes it really felt hard.
Yes, I was tired, and yes, sometimes I would fall back to sleep, but I was still receiving the benefits. I found this meditation taught me how to connect to myself, and start to cultivate the life I wanted. After the 40 days I noticed a profound shift in me.
I knew meditation and this connection to my soul was working.
To face my day at work I would listen to a 10-minute meditation in the car as I parked up.
During this meditation, I would start to visualise my day as I would like it to be.
I would often think about projects going well, colleagues being helpful, and the traffic flowing freely
Yet one day I recall thinking I don’t know where to start, I am so overloaded, I don’t know what can be done, I then started seeing all the tasks on my to-do list, (I have always been a fan of a list), float away, just simply disappearing, until I was left with one thing, and I thought, “oh yes that would be great.”
Feeling a little bemused I got out of the car and went into the office.

The assistant buyer was in early which was unusual, and she greeted me warmly, and let me know she had done some of the tasks on my list and was about to get on with another – wow!
I then switched on my laptop and loaded up my emails, to find I had an email from a colleague in another department letting me know that I no longer needed to complete a big piece of work as they had found another simpler way to do it! Yet another miracle
The day continued like this
The universe did have my back, and the power of meditation was really working.
While the path has not always been smooth for the last 10 years, meditation has been an essential part of my tool kit and I find it resets me, gets me back into the flow, and helps me lead a calmer more fulfilling life.
I am not perfect, I am human. I still get overwhelmed on occasion. I still question myself, but life now looks very different from the way it did, and I believe yours can too
